Aims & Scope

The official journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Higher Education Press

Engineering is an international open-access journal that was launched by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in 2015. Its aims are to provide a high-level platform where cutting-edge advancements in engineering R&D, current major research outputs, and key achievements can be disseminated and shared; to report progress in engineering science, discuss hot topics, areas of interest, challenges, and prospects in engineering development, and consider human and environmental well-being and ethics in engineering; to encourage engineering breakthroughs and innovations that are of profound economic and social importance, enabling them to reach advanced international standards and to become a new productive force, and thereby changing the world, benefiting humanity, and creating a new future.

We are interested in:

(1) News & Hightlights— This section covers engineering news from a global perspective and includes updates on engineering issues of high concern;

(2) Views & Comments— This section is aimed at raising academic debates in scientific and engineering community, encouraging people to express new ideas, and providing a platform for the comments on some comprehensive issues;

(3) Research— This section reports on outstanding research results in the form of research articles, reviews, perspectives, and short communications regarding critical engineering issues, and so on.

All manuscripts must be prepared in English, and are subject to a rigorous and fair peer-review process. Accepted papers will immediately appear online, and will be translated into Chinese.

Background

The CAE is the highest honorary and consultative academic institution in engineering science and technology in China. It consists of more than 800 CAE members, and is devoted to promoting the development of engineering science.

Academic research spearheads the development of engineering science and technology. To better lead engineering development and to provide a high-level international platform for engineering exchanges, the CAE worked with world-renowned engineering experts and scholars to launch Engineering. This initiative has received continuous responses and strong support from UNESCO, the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) member academies, and celebrated experts and scholars.

Special Issue on Intelligent Manufacturing

Many countries have developed their national manufacturing strategies in the past few years. Although these strategies are proposed and developed under different backgrounds, their common objective is to achieve intelligent manufacturing, which satisfies the demands of socialization, personalization, servitization, intelligence, and energy conservation. However, for intelligent manufacturing, realizing smart interconnection and interaction, data mining, ubiquitous computing, seamless cyber-physical fusion, etc., are always challenging. Fortunately, new enabling technologies for intelligent manufacturing have been developed recently, thus providing promising approaches to address these challenges. These new enabling technologies include Agents, Cloud Computing and Edge Computing, Internet of Things (IoT) or Industrial Internet, Big Data and Machine Learning, Cyber-Physical System (CPS) and Human-Cyber-Physical Systems, Digital Twins (DT) and Metaverse, and Industrial Foundation Models, which endow manufacturing processes with intelligence. For instance, IoT devices can communicate and interact with each other, thus enabling real-time monitoring and dynamic control. Big Data analytics, with AI and particularly machine learning, can help mine out potential rules, knowledge, and patterns to achieve smart prediction, evaluation, optimization, and decision-making. DT aims to construct interactive virtual mirrors for physical assets and fuse real and simulated data to provide more insights. These technologies can be combined to greatly promote manufacturing innovation in design, production, operation and maintenance, etc.

This special issue aims to present the latest advances and developments of new methods, techniques, systems, and tools dedicated to the application of enabling technologies for intelligent manufacturing.

Special Issue on Environmental Frontiers for Water-Energy Nexus
Submission Date: 2024-09-30

Water and energy are essential for human activity, which are closely interacted. Significant amounts of water are needed in almost all energy generation processes, e.g., generating hydropower, cooling power plants, extracting and processing fuels, growing biofuel crops. Meanwhile, the water sector needs energy to extract, treat, and transport water. Population growth and climate change placing additional demands, extra uncertainties on water and energy, and further challenging water and energy management by increasing water variability and intensifying weather events. However, the current planning is often made based on isolated considerations of water and energy without taking into account their mutual constraints. Therefore, this special issue is initiated in hoping to bring in new insights into water-energy nexus and to discover novel strategies supporting local and global sustainable development goals.

Topics include but not limit to:Water for Energy: water-optimized energy system, mining energy resources and cultivating biomass, refining liquid fuels, cooling thermoelectric power plants, generation of hydropower;Energy for Water: energy-optimized water system including collection and conveyance, drinking water treatment and distribution, water heating/cooling, wastewater treatment, water reuse;Water-Energy nexus: carbon constrained water system, water-energy-carbon synergy, sustainable water-energy management.

Special Issue on Theory and Key Technologies in Space Internet Networking

With the rapid development of satellite constellation projects, e.g., SpaceX, and the rapid progress of 3GPP NTN standardization, theory and technologies for space Internet networking (SIN) have held significant strategic importance and foresight. This special issue targets the focal points in SIN such as "What factors influence the performance of SIN? How SIN structure affects network service capabilities? How to match SIN resources with dynamic service needs? How to integrate SIN with AI and space physics?", to promote the intelligence and adaptability of SINs, provide key support for 6G revolution, and offer new ideas and possibilities for the future communication systems.

The scope of the special issue includes but not limited to protocol and system architectures, constellation design, network topology design, reliable networking under space environment effects, location management, satellite communications, link management and scheduling, routing, intelligent network control and operation, mobility management, laser links, resource management, and simulation and experiment platforms in the satellite Internet networking. The types of articles could be research article, views & points, reviews and perspectives.

Special Issue on Green Aviation Propulsion

Green aviation propulsion plays an important role in green aviation industries with the potential significant CO2 emission reduction. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set an ambitious target to reduce carbon emissions from the air transportation industry by 50% by 2050 compared to 2005, and therefore the governments, academia, industry and other organizations of different countries are eager to explore new energy and propulsion technologies for low emission green aviation industries.

The special issue of ENGINEERING aims at presenting to readers the very recent progresses and promising future developments of green aviation propulsion technologies. Authors are welcome to contribute your newly research results or reviews on the relevant areas. The topics of the special issue should include but are not limited in theoretical, simulation, experimental, reviewing, strategic and policy, economic, newly conceptional research results on green aviation, green aviation powers, high efficiency aero-engines, hybrid electric propulsion technology, relevant materials and engineering technologies, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), hydrogen production and storage, high capacitance batteries, hydrogen combustion, hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen safety, and any other low carbon emission aviation powers and technologies.
