Physica D (Nonlinear Phenomena) publishes research and review articles reporting on theoretical and experimental work, techniques, and ideas that advance the understanding of nonlinear phenomena.

The scope of the journal encompasses mathematical methods for nonlinear systems including: wave motion, pattern formation and collective phenomena in physical, chemical and biological systems; hydrodynamics and turbulence; integrable and Hamiltonian systems; and data-driven dynamical systems. The journal encourages submissions in established and emerging application domains, for example applications of nonlinear science to artificial intelligence, robotics, control theory, complex networks, and social and economic dynamics.

Special Issues
Special Issue on Compressible Turbulent Mixing
Submission Date: 2025-01-31

This collection would include papers selected from the 18th International Workshop on the Physics of Compressible Turbulent Mixing (which will held in Bristol, UK from July 14-19, 2024). This series of workshops, running since 1988, focuses on fundamental aspects of turbulent mixing in flows subject to destabilizing acceleration in both compressible and incompressible fluids. Topics covered by the workshop include, but are not limited to: · Rayleigh-Taylor instability · Richtmyer-Meshkov instability · Mixing layers · Experimental, numerical, and theoretical studies · Numerical and experimental techniques · Direct numerical simulation, large-eddy simulation, and engineering turbulence models · Applications. Special Issue on Multiple Scales: Theory and Applications
Submission Date: 2025-02-01

Many natural systems exhibit dynamics at different temporal (e.g. neural models) and spatial (e.g. vegetation patterns) scales. To study the dynamics of such systems, multiple-scale methods are typically employed. In this field, theoretical advancements and applications cross-fertilize each other: questions coming from applications lead to the need to develop new mathematical theories and methods or extend existing ones. On the other hand, the converse is also true with theory actually preceding the application. This special issue highlights results related to the workshop “Multiple Scales: Theory and Applications,” which was aimed at providing a dedicated focused platform for both theory-inclined and application-inclined multiple scales researchers. By providing this platform, the workshop sought to facilitate meaningful discussions, knowledge and methodology sharing on state-of-the-art open problems, and ultimately, the establishment of new research collaborations between theory-inclined and application-inclined researchers.
